Rye Neck, Valhalla Meet Again for Softball Championship

NANUET, N.Y. — Rye Neck and Valhalla will resume their rivalry when they play for the Section 1 Class B Softball Championship at 3 p.m. Saturday at Heroes Field at Lake Nanuet Park.

This is the second consecutive year the teams are playing for the title. Valhalla, the 2009 and 2010 Class C champion, defeated Rye Neck in the 2011 Class B final.

Rye Neck, led by ace Jessica Calvini and shortstop Nicole Pineda, is making its fourth straight trip to the Section 1 Class B title game.

"Every year this is our goal, to get to the final and win it," said Calvini, who threw a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts in a 6-0 semifinal win over Dobbs Ferry. "We've been able to do it four times. Hopefully, the law of averages is in our favor."

Valhalla, which is making its fifth consecutive appearance in a sectional final, including three in Class C, earned its berth with a 6-3 semifinal win over John F. Kennedy Catholic. Senior Danielle Maffei hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to snap a 3-3 tie.

Along with Calvini and Pineda, Rye Neck boasts Marisa Bella and Nicole Morgan. Valhalla's senior class is highlighted by Jade Fumarelli, Maddy DeMilio and Maffei.
