Sound Shore Olympians Enjoy Special Success

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The Sound Shore contingent to the New York State Special Olympic Summer Games held in Buffalo this month performed at a high level, earning several medals and taking top places in multiple events in track and field and swimming.

The Shore Stars, who hail from White Plains, Eastchester, Mamaroneck, Scarsdale, Larchmont, Pelham and New Rochelle, train at Hommocks Middle school and compete year-round in various Special Olympics events, including the New York State Summer, Fall and Winter Games.

Individually, Kim Weiss placed fourth in both the breaststroke and freestyle events, and Claire Foley took fourth in the freestyle and backstroke among women competitors. The Sound Shore swim team rook first place in the 100-yard relay to earn the gold medal.

In the men's events, Joe Lombardozzi placed second in the free and third in the back, Chris Moyer raced to third in the freestyle and fourth in the backstroke, and David Majsak took top spot and gold medal in the freestyle and third in the backstroke. Nell Johnsmeyer finished fourth in the freestyle and third in the breaststroke.

Sound Shore Olympians Track and Field

Zach Moll won gold in the men's shot put and placed second in the turbo javelin, while teammate Michael Johnson took gold in the 200-meter run and fifth in javelin. Justin Pesso took third-place bronze in both the 50-meter run and the shot put. Sterling Oliver ran to bronze in the 100-meter run and was second in the shot put.

On the women's side of the track and field competition, Michelle Gallotti led the Sound Shore Olympians by taking her first pentathlon gold. Jillian Staar ran second in the 200 meters and second in turbo javelin.
