Tiger Fever Ramps Up As Mamaroneck Beats Ramapo In Class AA Hoops Playoff

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The Mamaroneck High School boys basketball team defeated Ramapo High School, 58-53, in a Class AA playoff game Thursday on their Palmer Gym home court.

The win means the Tigers advance to the second round of playoffs -- Sectional quarterfinals -- for the first time in 38 years. Mamaroneck faces top seed Arlington on Wednesday at a time to be announced.

In other Tiger news, head basketball coach Ty Carver was named League Coach of the Year by the Lower Hudson Basketball Coaches Association. His varsity hoops squad finished its regular season at 11-7.

MHS Varsity Ice Hockey

Mamaroneck's varsity ice hockey team has a 13-5 season record and is set to face Suffern on Friday at 7:10 p.m. away in a non-conference game at the Sport-O-Rama. Outbracket playoff games of the Sectionals begin on Feb. 21, with teams advancing to final rounds on Feb. 23.

MHS Varsity Swimming & Diving

Wednesday night at Felix Festa Middle school in Clarkstown, the pool was on fire as sophomore Colin Johanson took 16th place in the 100 yard backstroke with a personal best time of 58.86. Johanson, who usually swims distance events (200 and 500 freestyles), challenged himself with the sprint event.

Additionally, Mamaroneck had four boys from its team qualify and compete at Pace University in the Sectional Diving Championships:  Ben Morris, Emilio Fernandez, Charlie Harris and Zack Owen. Harris advanced past the first cut-off at six dives to qualify for the finals. He placed 16th overall after 11 dives.

MHS Skiing  MHS junior Jackson Lovejoy is one of 18 skiers in the Section to qualify for the State Championships at Lake Placid on Feb. 23 and 24. 

MHS Varsity Track

The girls 4 x 800 meter relay team was invited to run at the Millrose Games, the preeminent track meet of the indoor season. The 4 x 800 team – comprised of Lauren Shpiz, Lauren Chapey, Katie DeVore and Shari Rauls -- is the same team that has been winning all season long in the distance medley relay.

The Girls Eastern 4 x 800 relay of the Millrose Games is Saturday at 3:56 p.m. at the New Balance Armory in New York City. 

The relay team won a bronze medal at the Yale Invitational and a gold medal at the New Balance Invitational. They also won a gold in the 4 x 800 at the County and Class A Championships.

MHS Wrestling

Mamaroneck wrestled well at the divisional meet last week and qualified seven athletes for Sectionals on Saturday at Arlington High and Sunday at Clarkstown South. Advancing are Crew Fullerton, Charlie Saez, Bobby Bizzard, Alex Sanchez, Max Velara, Roger Ransom, a third seed, and Youssif Hermida, a top seed.
