Tigers Drop Two in a Row With Loss to New Rochelle

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Before Mamaroneck hosts the Tiger Tournament this weekend, it had to face a tough test against New Rochelle.

Mamaroneck stayed in the game, but the Huguenots left the Tigers’ court with the win. New Rochelle defeated Mamaroneck, 71-64, Wednesday. Tigers’ leading scorer Matt Mezansky, who served a one-game suspension last week, was back to the form that his coach, Tyrone Carver Jr., expected.

Unfortunately, the team still fell short.

“We just needed to step up and help him out a little bit with handling the basketball,” Carver said. “We allowed their pressure to get to us a little bit in the second quarter.”

Mezansky had 16 points while Gerry McMullin led the team with 18 points and added five assists. Alex Lanni had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers.

Mamaroneck and New Rochelle, along with White Plains, are bunched in the Class AA standings beneath Mount Vernon. Still, Carver said Wednesday’s loss is no more important than any other.

“We don’t overemphasize any games,” Carver said. “Whoever our opponent is makes the games pivotal. We’re disappointed in our effort in giving up 71 points.”

Now, the Tigers turn their attention to the Tiger Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Rye, Rye Neck and Harrison will all participate in the event along with the host Tigers.

The Tigers have lost their last two games and Carver said this weekend’s tournament will be crucial.

“We need to bounce back,” Carver said. “We’ve lost to two good programs in White Plains and New Rochelle and we need to stop the bleeding right now. I consider the Friday night game (against Rye Neck) a must-win.”
