Michayla Baigel has been selected as Mamaroneck High School/ Daily Voice Standout Student-Athlete this week.

Baigel is a senior on the Tigers' varsity tennis team.

Overview of accomplishments/achievements:

Michayla Baigel's tennis coach, Tim Hooker, has had the privilege of working with her for four years in the Concert Band as well as coaching her on the tennis team for three years. She is extremely talented, hard-working and a curious learner. Michayla is quite a special young lady, someone who does not just do many things, but many things well -- with care and grace. Some coaches and teachers may complain they do not get to work with the student-athlete long enough to know what they can do; what their limits might be. No matter what she is involved in, Michayla always makes sure she gives it her best efforts, finds time to help others and sees to it that the experience is a success for all involved.

Q&A with Michayla:

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I don't have much spare time since I work every weekend from 8 to 5 and have tennis during the week, but when I do have free time, I like to relax, hang out with friends and family, and occasionally play clarinet as well.

Favorite restaurant in town?

My favorite restaurant in town is Red Plum because I really enjoy sushi!

Favorite subject in school?

My favorite subject in school is either band or most science classes. I really enjoy music and it has been a huge part of my life since 4th grade, while I also find every science class I have ever taken to be very interesting, so much so that I doubled up on sciences this year with AP Biology and AP Environmental Science.

What are some reasons for your success?

I think the biggest influence for my success academically has been my family members. They always push me to do my best and try the harder classes even if it is not necessarily what I want to do. My brother especially because we are very close and I don't want to let him down.

Biggest influences on your varsity career?

The biggest influences on my varsity career are probably my family, again, my coach Mr. (Tim) Hooker, and my teammates. They are all so supportive, and always help me if need be.

Person you would most like to meet?

I would most like to meet Nelson Mandela, I know it has nothing to do with tennis -- I'm not sure if it is supposed to and he is not alive -- but being South African I grew up hearing all of these amazing and inspiring stories about him and I have always looked up to him.

What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?

In 10 years, I hope to have a great job that I really enjoy and have a happy, healthy and successful life. I have no idea what for sure I want to do, so hopefully by then I will have figured that out.
