That contribution, combined with $20,000 from Con Edison, funds the entire 2015 “Bicycle Sundays” program, in which a stretch of the historic parkway from the Westchester County Center in White Plains south is closed to vehicular traffic.

The first Bicycle Sunday kicked off with a 10 a.m. ceremony near the County Center, where Friends of Westchester County Parks, which hosts the event, gave out T-shirts. The cycling, skating and jogging began with a celebratory air horn blast.

"The program, in its 41st year, is an iconic event that helps make Westchester a more special place," Joanne Fernandez, chairperson of the Friends of Westchester County Parks, said. "It’s wonderful that Bicycle Sundays continue to give families a unique chance to exercise and spend time together. We are grateful to Con Edison for continuing to provide its generous support, and to NewYork-Presbyterian for becoming a new major supporter.”

The program, one of the most popular Westchester County Parks events, continues for 11 Sundays in May, June and September – except Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Each year, more than 60,000 thousand cyclists, joggers and others come out to enjoy the curves and wooded scenery that make the nation’s first parkway a national historic landmark. The path winds alongside the wooded Bronx River Reservation.

Bicycle Sundays run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will be held this year on May 3, 10, 17 and 31, June 7, 14, 21 and 28, and on September 13, 20 and 27.

The course, a 13.1-mile round trip, stretches from the County Center to Scarsdale Road in Yonkers, running through White Plains, Hartsdale, Greenburgh, Scarsdale, Eastchester and Tuckahoe along the way. There are many points of entry and exit along the way. Parking is available at the County Center lot in White Plains for a $5 fee.
