John Ervasti of Sleepy Hollow Golf Club and Greg Rohlf of Mamaronecks Winged Foot Golf Club lead local golfers at the Fifth Metropolitan Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship at Essex County Country Club in West Orange, N.J.
Ervasti, the 2011 MGA Senior Amateur and 2010 MGA Senior Open champion, shot an opening-round 76 Tuesday, while Rohlf carded a 77, trailing behind Niall Handley of Essex Fells, N.J., who holds the lead at three-under-par 68.
The MGA Mid-Amateur Championship, which continues Wednesday, is an invitational consisting of the best 35-and-older players from across the metropolitan area and Handley has a strong record in the event, with a T-9 and runner-up finish the last two years.
