Top 10 of 2011: October Snow Storm Hits Mamaroneck

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Throughout the next week, The Daily Mamaroneck will recap 10 local stories that made headlines in 2011 and provide any available updates. They are in no particular order.

Thursday, The Daily Mamaroneck looks back on the October snow storm that left thousands without power, as well as the theft of a bench dedicated to the memory of a late Larchmont baby in mid-October.

An October nor'easter left thousands without power after heavy snowfall and strong winds hit Westchester Oct. 29. Mamaroneck didn't get the worst of the storm, which affected as many as 49,416 Westchester residents, according to Con Edison.

Mamaroneck was prepared for the storm, said Dan Sarnoff, assistant village manager. "We really were prepared," he said. "Obviously, a snowstorm on Oct. 26 of that magnitude probably has not happened in this region in a long time. If I said 100 years, it'd probably be a conservative estimate."

Another story that caught residents' attention in 2011 was that of Delaney's bench. Delaney Smith suddenly died in 2009 at the age of 2 months, said her mother Tiffany, who is a member of the Junior League of Westchester on the Sound.

In October 2010, the Junior League bought and dedicated a bench to Delaney's memory. That bench was stolen sometime between Oct. 9 and Oct. 10, according to Larchmont Police.

Smith, as well as residents, were stunned that someone would steal the approximately $1,000 bench and hope the thieves didn't realize its significance.

"It's hard to believe that someone would steal something that means so much," said Amy Sullivan, a friend of Tiffany's. "I really hope that the person didn't realize the significance of the bench and once they hear what it means to the Smith family, they will return it right away."

More than two months later, the Smith family is still asking: have you seen Delaney's bench? For the full story, click here.
