Letter To Editor: Mamaroneck Mayor Questions Trustee Over Italian Ice Shop

Trustee Miller once again, in my opinion, clearly demonstrates a lack of reality or understanding for what the history or events regarding most subjects that are brought before the Board of Trustees.

Mamaroneck Mayor Norman Rosenblum writes back addressing Village Trustee Ilissa Miller's concerns about a new Italian ice shop.

This is obvious by her own comments and lack of understanding and communications on these subjects which most likely are as a result of her constant absence from Board of Trustees meetings both physically and what appears to be a lack of understanding when present.

Subject: Ralph’s Italian Ices:

This is a new business that opened in half of the closed gas station located between Keeler Ave. and the Frank Ave. extension. The insinuation by Trustee Miller of a “seemingly converted overnight ice cream shop” is typical of Ilissa Miller’s ‘baiting’ the emotions of a situation seeking unwarranted favor from a group of concerned citizens at the expense of potential dialogue seeking answers and relief to those very concerned neighbors.

The reality is that the establishment of this business did not require any special permit and is an allowable use under Village of Mamaroneck code. Ralph’s Italian Ices does not fall under the term “fast food service” as it does not make or prepare food, but rather is a distributor of frozen desserts and no permit is required under current local code.

However, the apparent unexpected success of this business has resulted in an increase of a myriad of problems for both the business and neighbors alike. Traffic, safety, noise, debris, parking, are all problems that need to be, and are being, reviewed by the business, the neighbors and the Village. The Chief of Police is well aware and an increased presence and issued summons has occurred.

The Chief is also meeting with the neighborhood representatives for further discussion. The Village administration is reviewing other measures, such as required garbage enclosures and there is a traffic study underway, a study for parking spaces and layout on site. Further, it was noted at the BOT that a group of neighbors plan an appeal to the Zoning Board of Appeals regarding the issue of the Building Department authorizing the opening of this business, which is their right; although one should not give false hope or insinuate that there are powers available, such as Ilissa Miller’s unsubstantiated claims, by keeping in mind the description of the initial establishment as noted above.

This is but one of several problems that will occur throughout the Village of Mamaroneck as we are a very successful and vibrant community that, with this positive growth, it is inevitable that situations will happen and the proper methods to address them is not by uninformed or emotional diatribe such expressed by Trustee Ilissa Miller.

There is an ongoing dialogue that is addressing the expressed concerns for this situation and will continue in spite of the political petty and small minded actions of those with personal agendas and a vendetta mentality. It would serve Trustee Miller well, if she were really interested in the health, safety and welfare of the residents, visitors and business, to have the ability to understand facts and realize that her inadequacies of public service result as example by voting against the replacing of asbestos water lines in the Village as she voted against at the same meeting; or worse where she believes 24% of the Village population are not equal citizens. The best Miller will do is not running for re-election !!!
