As part of the school's one-of-a-kind Elaine Stamas New York Philharmonic Educational Residency program, Hoff-Barthelson chamber ensemble students will learn from and perform for members of the New York Philharmonic. Musicians will share their knowledge of ensemble playing with the young musicians and provide them with a better understanding of technique, musicianship and musical style.

"The students are working with musicians at the top of their careers, who listen to them play works from the chamber music literature and offer constructive advice and direction on technical and musical improvements to their performances," said Terry Joshi, Director of Special Events at Hoff-Barthelson Music School. "We know that our students gain special insights from our annual New York Philharmonic visitors."

Four members of the Philharmonic, Lisa Kim, violin; Kuan-Chen Lu, violin; Rebecca Young, viola and Mindy Kaufman, flute, will coach students at Hoff-Barthelson from 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Monday, April 24. The Educational Residency is open to the public to observe and free of charge.

"This year there will be eleven ensembles which are coached by four members of the Philharmonic, who spend about 45 minutes with the students working on technique, musicality and how to play together," said Joshi. "It's one of our premier educational opportunities for our instrumental students, so it's very exciting." 2017 marks the 21st year of this partnership program between Hoff-Barthelson and the New York Philharmonic.

Master classes and chamber music have been a foundation of Hoff-Barthelson’s educational philosophy since the school was founded in 1944. From their earliest stages of proficiency, students are encouraged to participate in chamber ensembles, an opportunity that allows them to make music with others.

That evening at 8:00 p.m, ten members of the New York Philharmonic will present a recital in the Hoff-Barthelson Auditorium, which will feature the works of Brahms, Persichetti, Paganini and Busch. Renowned pianist Peter Serkin will make a guest appearance with the Philharmonic members. Everyone is encouraged to come and join in this magical evening. It is open to the public, as is the chamber music coaching in the afternoon.

Admission to the recital is $28 for general admission; $18 or seniors and free of charge for students. To make a reservation to attend the afternoon session, purchase tickets for the evening recital, or for additional information, call (914) 723-1169 or e-mail hb@hbms.org.
