Mamaroneck Alums' John Lennon Reality Show Spoof Goes Viral

RYE, N.Y. – Rye resident Adam Blockton and his brother Jesse are no strangers to getting major hits on YouTube.  The Mamaroneck High School alums have written songs together that have been featured on the small and large screens, and their latest comedic video has gone viral.

By asking what would happen if John Lennon auditioned for the singing competition, “The Voice,” the online world is abuzz about the current state of the music industry and what it takes to make it as a singer or musician today.

The reality show parody was published Monday and had been viewed just under 1 million times as of Wednesday evening.

The video received attention from The Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, CBS radio, Buzzfeed, Collegehumor and Mashable, among others.  It was also re-tweeted by Carson Daly, host of “The Voice,” and filmmaker Judd Apatow shared it via Twitter, saying, “This made me laugh.”

“It's possible that today someone like John Lennon would be overlooked on one of these singing competitions because his voice isn't technically perfect. And scarier than that, these competition shows have become one of only very few avenues left into the music business. So if you're John Lennon today, you're doubly out of luck!” Adam Blockton told The Daily Voice.

Adam noted that despite this opinion of reality show singing competitions, he still considers “American Idol” one of his guilty pleasures, and said his brother Jesse is a fan of “The Voice.”

“The intention of the video was to be funny and to laugh at the absurdity of seeing one of the most legendary singer/songwriters in the history of music, singing on a talent competition show in 2013, but of course the message and the dialogue it's started is very intentional,” Adam said.

Jesse Blockton, who lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 1992.  Adam graduated from the school one year later.

The Blockton brothers are also known for their 2007 song written for Britney Spears that had everyone asking if the song would be recorded on the pop star’s album that year.  The song, “Fed Up,” was played on YouTube more than 1 million times in less than three days as fans speculated over whether it had leaked from Spears’ album.
