The Black Cow, 7 Wheeler Ave., Pleasantville, (914) 495-3727, and 4 Old Post Road, Croton-on-Hudson, (914) 271-7544

The Fine Grind: Prides itself on being the anti-Starbucks with its in-house roasted beans and Greenwich Village vibe. The Pleasantville location is on one of the village’s main streets, while the Croton locale recently moved spots to a more spacious building.

Co-owner Michael Grant and other baristas get a thumbs-up from customers for their skill at fielding orders at both. The beans - sourced from all over the world -- are roasted at the Cow's Croton-on-Hudson cafe and bought to the Pleasantville venue where they are ground up.

Most Popular Brew: Cow has high-octane blends like "Axel's Grease," which is made with half Brazilian and half Kenyan beans, and "Love Supreme," inspired by jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane, with Ethiopian Harrah and Kenyan Peaberry beans.

Its signature mocha drinks, like the “Cow Whip,” grown-up chocolate milk made with espresso; and the “Frozen Cow,” a Frappuccino-like concoction attract the younger crowds. Then of course there's the “Black Cow,” its signature brew made with espresso and steamed chocolate milk.
