Checkmate, almost.

Members of the Bronxville School chess team took home the silver medal at the Under-1900 division of this year's National High School Chess Championships, which were recently held in Columbus, Ohio, marking the team’s best finish in a national event.

School officials said that the students “demonstrated outstanding mental endurance and strategic planning over the course of the competition,” as they competed against 1,500 of the nation’s top players from 42 states.

Members of the Under-1900 team include Bronxville High School junior Jack Kochansky, sophomore Conner Stoltz, freshmen Nicholas Bianco and Calvin Golimbu and Bronxville Middle School eighth-graders Alexander Kupersmith and Tyler Tanaka-Wong, who also placed seventh in the individual competition.

“Bronxville’s success at the national championships was truly a team effort,” Sunil Weeramantry, team coach and executive director of the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, said. “Several players opted to compete in a higher section and were willing to sacrifice their individual interests to support their schoolmates. It bodes well for the future of Bronxville chess.”
