Larchmont Newcomers Club Helps Ease Transition

LARCHMONT, N.Y. – Making the transition from one place to another can be difficult for families, especially those with children, but the Larchmont Newcomers Club helps to ease that process by introducing people to the community through a network of members and volunteers.

“It’s a great way to meet new people,” the group's publicity chair Sari Sternschein said. “I’ve made a lot of my close friends through the club; it’s really allowed us to meet great people.”

The club is open to residents of Larchmont, Mamaroneck and New Rochelle. Since 1951, the goal of the organization is to introduce existing residents to each other and to welcome and acquaint new residents to the area. More than 200 residents are now part of the club.

“It gives you something to do,” said Sternschein, who moved from New York City five years ago with her husband and joined the group in 2010. “Before, we didn't enjoy what the area had to offer because we didn't know what was around.”

Each year, the group has about 20 organized events, starting with its season kick event, which this year is Sept. 8. The events usually have food, games, crafts for kids and some form of entertainment. A secondary goal of the organization is to work with local businesses and infuse newcomers and residents with the services provided by local establishments.

“We spend a lot of time working with local businesses to cross promote. It’s great for everyone involved,” Sternschein said.

Charity work and fundraising also is a large part of the organiztion. It works mostly with local charities, such as Hope Community Services and Friends of Karen , but always is looking to work with new organizations.

“I really enjoy volunteering and getting more involved in the community,” Sternschein said about working with the charities.

Families with children can take advantage of the play groups, in which children are grouped by age and meet once a week at a playground or home. Sometimes, they even go on trips to museums.

“It’s very welcoming; it’s not cliquey or anything like that,” Sternschein said. “It gives you the opportunity to meet new people and it gives you something to do.”

Membership fees are $55 for the year for a family and $35 for a single person. The enrollment form for the Larchmont Newcomers Club is available online, as well as contact information for board members. There is a calendar of events available on the website. A new Facebook page also recently was created.
