Cortlandt Reminds Residents To Safely Dispose Of Prescription Drugs

CORLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – The town of Cortlandt, the Cortlandt Community Coalition and Westchester County police are reminding town residents they can safely dispose of unwanted, unused or expired prescription medications from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays in the lobby of the town's Purchasing Department, 1 Heady St.

The drop-off box was created to keep discarded prescription drugs from falling into the hands of children and from getting into the town's water supply. The program is administered with the cooperation of the Westchester County Police Department, the town of Cortlandt and the Cortlandt Community Coalition.

Only prescription medications should be placed in the drop box. Residents dropping off unwanted prescription drugs should not place syringes or liquids in the box. Medications placed in the drop box are removed by law enforcement and securely transported for proper disposal.

“We thank the Westchester County Police Department for this important service, where residents can take expired and unused prescription medications to a safe drop off area in order to remove them so they don't get into the wrong hands. Substance Abuse Prevention is extremely important and we will continue to work with all involved to prevent tragedies from occurring,” said Cortlandt Supervisor Linda Puglisi.

In the next year, the coalition plans to promote through advertisements the accessibility of the drop box, reminding residents of its availability.

“We are committed to keeping discarded prescription drugs away from children and out of our water supply. Located at Town Hall and easily accessible during hours of operation, the prescription drug drop box affords residents a convenient way to dispose of their prescription medications in a safe and responsible manner,” said Colleen Anderson, Cortlandt Community Coalition coordinator.
