Members of the Town of Mamaroneck and Village of Larchmont police departments also joined the vigil.
Mayor Norman S. Rosenblum led the ceremony and discouraged speeches from public officials.
Rabbi Mendel Silberstein offered a blessing while recognizing the seventh night of Hanukkah. "Every one of you truly . . . are the forces of good,'' Silberstein said to nearly 30 patrol officers who stood silently in a semi-circle. "Good will always prevail over evil. Light will always prevail over dark."
Visitors spontaneously joined in to sing "God Bless America." Then someone in the crowd suggested people personally thank an officer and they gave officers handshakes and hugs. Some patrol officers were accompanied by family members.
"I think it's great and it's been a long time coming,'' said retired Mamaroneck Police Chief Joseph DelBianco, who currently serves as the executive director of the Westchester County Chiefs of Police Association. "It means a lot here as well as to the officers in the metro area. It's about time the community came out and showed their support."
"Bring a candle to light and if you choose wear blue,' this will be a silent respect to the two slain New York Police Department officers and also an expression of support for all uniformed police officers who put their lives on the line every day,'' Rosenblum said earlier Monday.
On Saturday, two uniform NYC police officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, were shot dead in their patrol car. A suspect was arrested. Sunday in Florida, Tarpon Springs Police Officer Charles Kondek was shot and run over. Kondek was a former NYC police officer and father of six.
"This is just a terrible shock and it's painful to all of us,'' DelBianco said.
Assemblyman Steve Otis attended as did several village trustees, Village Manager Richard Slingerland and other public officials.
People held candles and lit candles next to a memorial outside the Mamaroneck Police Department.
