MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The black drape covering Jimmy's Pizza drew curious looks from many passing by on Mamaroneck Avenue Wednesday night, but when crews unloaded lights, sound systems and casting chairs for the new HBO series, "Girls," people caught on -- some even began cat calling.
The comedy series about single girlfriends in their 20s living in New York City, which began filming on Halstead Avenue in Harrison Tuesday and will wrap Friday, briefly moved over to Mamaroneck to shoot one scene.
Ilene Landress, a producer, said the short scene portraying the main character, Hannah, on a date in a pizzeria, would only take a few hours and estimated they would finish by 10 p.m. Although the production has required police assistance with traffic in Harrison, the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department told location manager Suk Yi Mar they wouldn't need assistance because of the brevity of their shoot.
The crew didn't arrive in Mamaroneck until after 8 p.m., which Landress said put them over one hour behind schedule. Meanwhile, extras for the scene waited in a holding area at 3 Jalapenos Restaurant, down the road until 9 p.m., when they began shooting.
Yi Mar scouted Jimmy's Pizza two weeks ago for the scene, as well as several other locations, and the director selected the 36-year Mamaroneck staple one week ago. Yi Mar said Jimmy's just looks like a place that would be in East Lansing, MI, where the scene takes place. Bruce Eric Kaplan, co-executive producer, said, "It's so clearly itself."
HBO picked up the comedy series, created, directed the show that stars 25-year-old Lena Dunham, in January. It is loosely slated for a run on the pay-cable network sometime in 2012.
Jimmy's Pizza closed to customers after the crews arrived and actors began rehearsing, but will be open for business as usual Thursday.
