Power Hour Exchange In Montrose Covers Heroin Addiction

MONTROSE, N.Y. -- The public will learn about the national epidemic of prescription drug misuse and heroin addiction at the “Power Hour Exchange: The New Face of Heroin Addiction” Wednesday, March 30 at Hendrick Hudson Free Library in Montrose.

The free event will be a fast-paced, fact-packed, 60-minute exchange of information from experts on the four misused prescription medications, and their short­ and long­-term effects on the body, mind and spirit, as well as heightened risk factors for athletes.

Presenters include David Gerber, M.Ed., the director of counseling at Shelter Services, St. Christopher's Inn, and founder of Hudson Valley Interventions and Kanta Arsani, Ph.D.,  R.Ph., a registered pharmacist at Northern Westchester Prescription Center.

The Exchange is being organized and sponsored by Drug Crisis in Our Backyard, Cortlandt Community Coalition and Croton Community Coalition.

 “The opiate epidemic is so far reaching that it is difficult to comprehend. According to the DEA, America is losing 140 people every day to opiate overdose," said Susan Salomone, Executive Director, Drug Crisis In Our Backyard.

Drug Crisis In Our Backyard was started in 2012 by Susan and Steve Salomone and Carol and the late Lou Christiansen after they lost their sons to a battle with addiction. 

The Croton Community Coalition works proactively to keep Croton teens safe and drug ­free, and acts as a resource for Croton teens and parents to make informed choices about drugs and alcohol. 

The Cortlandt Community Coalition is made up of parents, substance abuse counselors, local and county government officials, representatives from state and county police, faith- based organizations, educational groups, civic organizations, PTAs and medical organizations. 

The "Power Hour Exchange" will run from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m., at the library, 185 Kings Ferry Road, Montrose, N.Y.
