LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Hatcher Shea and the rest of Maryanne LaRue's kindergarten class took their first school pictures Monday morning outside Murray Avenue School.
Shea may not have as much photo-taking experience as the older kids in the Mamaroneck School District, but the California-native put on his best smile for the cameras.
"I like taking pictures and I also like to see the pictures when they're done," he said.
The Larchmont resident said his favorite picture is one he took with his girlfriend from California, Colette, which put a smile on LaRue's face.
While kids "pretty much know what to do" by the time they reach the fifth grade, Cassidai Studio's class photographer Lucinta Rowe likes getting to know the students at an early age.
"With so many of the schools, you get to watch the kids grow," said Rowe, a New Fairfield resident. "You shoot them in kindergarten, then, by the time they get to the fourth or fifth grade, they're ready for their close up."
Rowe, who is in her second season with the Stamford, CT-based photography studio, gets the kids started with a group photo, before sending them to one of her three colleagues for individual shots.
"You have to be really positive," she said. "If they're smiling with me, they're more apt to sit down and smile for the next photographer."
Rowe does that by taking two pictures: one regular photo and one silly-face photo. Most kids look forward to making silly faces, said Elizabeth Dillon, a first-grade teacher at Murray Avenue School.
While Shea took his individual photo sitting at a table in front of the school, Brendan Greaney took his sitting under a tree. Others took their school picture sitting on a bench.
Members of the PTA who signed up for picture day helped photographers situate the students to ensure their school pictures will be a keepsake for years to come.
School pictures continue Tuesday at Murray Avenue School. School pictures will be taken at Chatsworth Avenue School Oct. 3 and 4, Hommocks Middle School Oct. 6, Mamaroneck High School Oct. 12 and 13, Mamaroneck Avenue School Oct. 17 and 18. Central School took its school pictures Sept. 22.
