This years Senior Seminar shook up the typical Mamaroneck High School schedule for seniors, who participated in workshops to prepare them for the next step in life.
Seniors attended a 9 a.m. assembly in the McLain auditorium, featuring a keynote address by comedian Bernie McGrenahan, who has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman on CBS and Comedy Central. Students said they graded his performance, which focused on lessons learned from his college partying experience, an A. It was really good, senior Matt Wolf said. He was really funny. He used the usual scare tactics, but he was really relatable.
Afterward, each student attended two workshops, which they choose in advance. All six workshops focused on preparing seniors for the mental and physical challenges they will face after graduation. One workshop, titled Shaping Your Future, encouraged seniors to visualize success in the next phase of their lives. The presenter, Hollis Baker, led the workshop in a 15-minute relaxation exercise, where students laid on the floor in the dark as she instructed them to look down the road and envision success.
More than anything, you are what you say you are, said Baker, a hypnotist who has given lectures for 27 years, including at last years Senior Seminar. Baker also encouraged the 35 seniors present at the second session to create a vision board, which is a board with pictures of the things you want out of life. Baker said that looking at these images every day gets you thinking positively and can inspire you to achieve them.
Other workshops included belly dancing to improve self-esteem, two workshops on sexuality in the new millennium, separated by sex, a look at what causes the freshman 15 and graduates from the 2009 class sharing their college experiences.
