MAMARONECK, N.Y. Sister Catherine Duignan, a former Mamaroneck Eucharistic minister, died June 25 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, N.Y. She was 85.
Duignan served as parish secretary at St. Vito's Church in Mamaroneck for four years before serving as Eucharistic minister from 1993 to 2004.
The daughter of John and Catherine Dolan Duignan, she was born Ellen Ann Duignan on Nov. 15, 1926, in County Leitrim, Ireland. She moved to the U.S. at the age of 17 and entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill, N.Y., on Sept. 8, 1950.
Duignan professed her first vows in 1952 and her final vows in 1957. She earned a bachelors of science degree in education from St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill and a masters degree in reading from Manhattan College in the Bronx.
Throughout her professional career, Duignan served in the Archdiocese of New York. She taught at elementary and high schools in New York City and at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Middletown, N.Y.; Sacred Heart Church in Suffern; and Sacred Heart Church in Monroe, N.Y.
In 2005 she began working part time as a receptionist at Dowling Gardens in Sparkill. Duignan also volunteered for local community service for Dominican Convent in Sparkill until her death.
Duignan was predeceased by four brothers, Joseph, William, Hubert and James; and three sisters, Anne (Sister Columcille), Brigid and Margaret. She is survived by a sister, Mary McKeon of County Leitrim; 17 nieces and nephews; 27 great-nieces; and many relatives and friends.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel in the Dominican Convent of Sparkill. Visitation is from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the convent. Burial will be at St. Agnes Cemetery in Sparkill. Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
