Larchmont Residents Can Take Town Survey

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – From now until Sept. 3, Mamaroneck and Larchmont residents can comment on how their tax dollars will be spent in the coming years.

The Town of Mamaroneck has announced that it will be conducting a town survey to get a general idea how residents feel about the town now, and where they would like to see it in the future.

“We can take a guess at what people treasure most, but I think it is better to take a proactive approach,” said Town Supervisor Nancy Seligson.

The town conducted a survey in 2004 and about one-third of town residents replied. After receiving results, the town made changes to recreation services, added street lights and became more responsive to residents according a statement released by the town. That survey was sent out in the mail. This year the town is saving postage costs by making the survey available online.

“The last survey led to some changes in how we delivered services to residents,” said Seligson. “I hope this year it will give us a good idea of what people value in the town and gives us a focus.”

The Town of Mamaroneck collects taxes for the town, schools and the county, but only about 20 percent of the taxes collected actually stay in the town, according to a press release sent out by the town supervisor’s office. That 20 percent pays for police and fire, ambulance response, recreation, town court operations, garbage collection, highway maintenance, snow removal, community and senior services, conservation, assessment and tax collection, building services, public water and sewers, code enforcement and permits and planning and zoning.

“The Town Board is up against constraints that it’s never been before. We want to focus on things that are important,” said Town Administrator Stephen Altieri.

Resident of the Town of Mamaroneck, the Village of Mamaroneck and the Village of Larchmont are encouraged to take the survey.  More that one survey can be taken per household. Surveys are available online on the Town of Mamaroneck’s website. The direct link is: http://www.townofmamaroneck.org/features/feature_survey.html
