In December, jurors found Marcus Black, 58, of Poughkeepsie, guilty of second-degree burglary for breaking into a LaGrange home three years ago and stealing several guns, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported.

Black was sentenced under a statute aimed at people who are convicted of three or more violent felonies within a 10-year-span. The catch is that period excludes the time that person may have been in prison, The Poughkeepsie Journal said.

While Black’s criminal career dates back more than 30 years, much of that time was spent behind bars, according to The Poughkeepsie Journal.

Black, who plans to appeal, was convicted of first-degree robbery in 1980 and of second-degree robbery in 1996, according to The Poughkeepsie Journal.

The Dutchess County Court judge who sentenced him Wednesday could have imposed a minimum 16 years, but went for the max after stating that Black was a danger to society and was best kept locked up, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported.
