Save Our Tigers, a group of concerned parents from the school district, came together after the 2010-2011 budget cut the sports teams. So-called "modified" teams allow for high-level instruction without the time commitment and intensity of varsity sports.

"This is another instance, because of budgetary constraints, that we've had to rely on the generosity of members of our community to self-fund some of these programs," Robin Nichinsky, school board member, has said.

The parents raised the necessary funds independent of the school district and donated it to have the teams reinstated, and have done so each year since. The affected teams are: the second teams for modified field hockey and junior varsity boys soccer, the modified teams for volleyball, softball and girls basketball and freshman baseball and boys basketball.

The district must receive the funds by Aug. 1 because it has to set schedules, practice times and inform other communities who have participating inter-scholastic team competition," Dr. Robert Shaps, Superintendent of Mamaroneck schools, has said.

The benchmark to meet was $90,000 in 2012 and $30,000 in 2011.

Save Our Tiger Teams has organized a Wine Night at 7:30 p.m. June 8. Tickets are $75 per person and checks should be made payable to Mamaroneck Union Free School District. RSVP by June 2 to karenhsp@verizon.net or trentben97@gmail.com.

There will be a silent auction for a signed Mariano Rivera 42 jersey, a vacation rental in Islamorada, Fla. and coveted sports tickets.
