MAMARONECK, N.Y. The Mamaroneck Union Free School District has spent this summer making small improvements in various locations in an effort to go green and save money in the long-run.
The district agreed to work with a private energy service company to identify and evaluate energy-saving opportunities. Using the recommendations given, the district is installing new lighting, weather stripping on exterior doors and energy efficient heating pump motors in each location. At the high school, extra insulation in the attic roof and around heating pipes is also being added, as well as new windows on the side of the school facing Palmer Avenue.
Its a win-win scenario to be able to save money and employ a greener approach, said Public Information Director Debbie Manette.
To pay for the updates, the district borrowed a total of $4,891,632. Asbestos removal will cost about $75,000, with the remaining $4,816,632 going toward construction. The idea is that the money saved through energy efficiency will eventually pay for the amount borrowed by the district.
In our case, the savings in energy consumption will be over 17 years, and it will pay for the borrowing to pay for the project, said Manetta.
Schools typically take advantage of the summer months by completing projects that cannot be done while students are roaming the hallways. There are no major construction overhauls going on this summer in Mamaroneck.
We've had a lot more going on over the last few summers, Manette wrote in an email.
New fire-alarm systems are also being installed in the schools this summer, and brick work is being completed on the Palmer Avenue side of Mamaroneck High School.
According to Assistant Superintendent for Business for Rye Neck Union Free School District Kimberly Bucci, the Rye Neck schools are only working on regular, intensive summer maintenance work. There are no other projects happening this summer.
