MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The percentage of Mamaroneck students considered proficient in math and English Language Arts for grades three to eight was significantly higher than the average results from throughout New York State, which were significantly lower than last year's testing scores.
The New York State Department of Education released statewide standardized testing results for grades 3-8 in math and English Wednesday.The scores proved to be significantly lower than past years, due to the new Common Core Learning Standards that were adopted by the State Board of Regents in 2010.
According to State Education Commissioner John B. King Jr., this change in scores – which will effectively create a new baseline of student learning – is largely the result of the shift in the assessments to measure the Common Core Standards, which more accurately reflect students' progress toward college and career readiness.
The results showed that 31.1 percent of grade 3-8 students across the state met or exceeded the ELA proficiency standard; 31 percent met or exceeded the math proficiency standard.
However, the Mamaroneck Union Free School District does not consider the results to be discouraging.
Debbie Manetta, director of public relations for the district, told The Daily Voice, "Like every district across the state, we expected the results would be slightly lower. What I can tell you is that we are very proud of the tremendous work our teachers and staff have put in to understanding the state's common course standards."
Manetta said teachers are employing creative and effective methods to integrate the new curriculum, and that the district has placed a large emphasis on professional development.
"Our team will be thoroughly reviewing and analyzing the results in coming weeks," she said.
