Update: Mamaroneck High Activities Canceled, Mid-Terms Delayed

UPDATE (8:30 a.m. Saturday): All Saturday activities at all schools within the Mamaroneck School District will be canceled due to the snow. All evening and weekend activities at Mamaroneck High School were canceled due to a gas leak found outside the school Friday that forced an evacuation of the building.

MHS will be open Sunday between 10 a.m. and noon for any student who left books or belongings there on Friday and would like to come retrieve them.

UPDATE (4:30 p.m.): The gas leak came from a two-inch underground pipe outside of the school, said Bob McGee, Con Edison spokesman. When a plumber repairing the pipe began disconnected it, Con Edison personnel supervising the work smelled gas and took the appropriate precautions. The work being done was to repair a leak in the pipe.

Con Edison turned off the private-property gas valve on the pipe, a high pressure service line, 19 feet away from the building and the readings on gas fumes in the building declined.  At 2:10 p.m., when the building was clear, the evacuation was ended for administration personnel, McGee said.

MAMARONECK, N.Y. - All afternoon, evening and weekend activities scheduled at Mamaroneck High School have been cancelled, and next week's mid-terms have been delayed one day, because gas fumes remain in the building after a gas leak Friday morning, the school announced.

Con Edison confirmed they continue to pick up readings of gas fumes in the school. The building remains closed until further notice.

Students preparing for mid-terms will have to wait until Sunday at the earliest to retrieve any books and belongings left at Mamaroneck High School when they were forced to evacuate at around 11:45 a.m.

The social studies exam is now planned for Tuesday morning and the art exam for Tuesday afternoon. A more detailed revised exam schedule will be posted to the school website later this afternoon, according to the notice. Monday will be a Day 5.

Safety permitting, the school hopes to open for a brief period at some point Sunday and will post an update on its website when they have confirmed it to be safe.
