Mamaroneck's Banks Wins Second State Track Title

This story has been updated to include comment from Bob Morrissey, Mamaroneck track coach.

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- For a second consecutive year, Mamaroneck High School senior Anima Banks is the New York State champion in the 1,000 meter run.

Banks finished with a time of 2:49.84 at the New York State Indoor Track Championships, held at Cornell University's Barton Hall Saturday.

"She's an amazing athlete, she's talented, she's hard working, she's very competitive and she loves to race," said Mamaroneck track coach Bob Morrissey. "There's a mental toughness about her that's incredible."

The track star, who will attend Duke University in the fall, was also the anchor for the Tigers' Section 1 top qualifying 4x800 meter relay team, which placed third. Banks, sophomore Leonie Rauls and eighth graders Shari Rauls and Katie DeVore received their bronze medals.

"It's quite amazing they came in third place in the state," said Morrissey, who added this year's team was his youngest ever with two eighth-graders.

The same team will compete in the 4 x 800 relay meet at the New Balance National Track Championships at the 168th Street New Balance Armory this Saturday at 7:15 p.m. Then, Banks will compete in the 800 meter run Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

Banks recently recorded the second fastest time in the country this year in the 1,000-meter run at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in January, and the eighth fastest all time for a U.S. high school girl runner. This season, she holds the nation's second fastest time.
