The New Rochelle Police Department will be participating in the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Speed Awareness week, which kicked off on Monday. During the detail, local and state law enforcement agencies will be cracking down on speeding drivers in an effort to curtail speed-related crashes.

During the Speed Awareness Week blitz, officers will intensify enforcement of posted speed limits throughout the City. Officials said the “intensified enforcement effort against speeding drivers underscores the severity of the problem, both locally and across the nation.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says three out of every 10 drivers are self-professed “speeders”. According to NHTSA, the economic cost to society from speed-related crashes is $52 billion annually.

“Speeding drivers put themselves, their passengers and other drivers at tremendous risk,” Traffic Unit Supervisor Det. Sgt., Myron Joseph said. “Our goal is to save lives, and we’re putting all drivers on alert - the posted speed limit is the law.”
