New York continues to rank among the top 25 best states in the country.
The Empire State came in at No. 23 – down slightly from No. 20 last year – on the 2024 Best States list by U.S. News & World Report, released Tuesday, May 7.
Rankings were determined using 71 metrics across eight categories, including fiscal stability, infrastructure, education, health care, and the economy. Data was pulled from national surveys taken by nearly 70,000 people.

17-Year-Old Among 5 Burglars Targeting Long Island Business, Police Say
Five suspects, including a 17-year-old, were arrested in connection with a commercial burglary on Long Island.
The break-in happened at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, May 5, in Bayport at Moe’s Sweet Air, located on Bernice Drive near Montauk Highway.
Suffolk County Police said five males, all between the ages of 17 and 21, broke a window and stole money and vape products from the business.
Following an investigation, Fifth Squad detectives arrested the following suspects on suspicion of third-degree burglary:

A Queens man who is wanted across the country and the world for jewelry theft has been arrested on Long Island, police announced.
Forty-nine-year-old Yaorong Wan, who lives in Queens, was arrested on Saturday, May 4 for the Manhasset incident, which happened nearly three weeks before, according to Nassau County Police.
Wan, on Friday, April 19, is alleged to have walked into London Jewelers, located at 2046 Northern Boulevard.
Once inside, police said he distracted the salesperson using a sleight of hand and stole a $17,000 Chopard watch.

Serial Siphoner: Man Steals Cooking Oil Dozens Of Times Across Nassau County, Police Say
A Queens man has been arrested after police said he stole cooking oil from multiple businesses on Long Island.
Rabindra Singh, age 47, was nabbed in connection to a series of cooking oil thefts, the Nassau County Police announced on Monday, May 6.
His arrest comes after Singh, who is from Queens, allegedly was caught at Frantoni’s Pizzeria, located at 1928 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow, using a power pump and blue hose to siphon cooking oil into his 2012 Ford Econoline van.
Singh was arrested at the scene with no incidents.
